Before opening our doors in February 2006, I was feeling empty and dissatisfied with my profession in health care.
Personal changes in my life awakened a desire in me to create a space that not only satisfied my need for creativity, but also met my need to nurture my spirit and nurture others. Drawing upon my experiences in nursing, I found the courage to pursue a new path that centered on the power of healing touch.
With that focus in mind, I took to dusting off the books on alternative healing that I had acquired during my years of practicing massage therapy. Shortly thereafter, my daughter, Rachel, and I took a trip to visit friends in Maine. While we visited, we found a quaint tea house where we experienced great foot massages.
For the next 6 months following our trip, my daughter nagged me incessantly telling me that we should pursue a similar idea and create our own version of it. Being a coffee drinker, I was resistant to the idea of a tea house and suggested instead a little gift shop. I knew that whatever we decided to pursue, that I wanted people to feel very special and offer the type of customer service I had experienced during trips to the South.
Nothing was really coming together and then seemingly, out of the blue, I woke up one night and could not get back to sleep. I had a steady voice in my head telling me You need to open a foot sanctuary. Instead of calling a psychiatrist about the voice in my head, I called my daughter who responded with an elated, FINALLY!
In the days that followed we began our planning. Through my daughters research into essential oils, collaboration with her to create the menu, help from my son-in-law in bringing our carpentry ideas to life, a local artist, Mark Fitzgerald, fulfilling our requests for unusually large bowls and my husbands expertise in music, Heel Your Sole was born.
Our work has been a learning experience since we opened in 2006. Changes have been made as needed to maintain the purpose and vision of Heel Your Sole. With the help of the amazing, caring, professional people that share in my vision, I am able to continue lifting my spirit by the souls and soles that we have comforted.

Our building was erected in 1897 in an Historic town that was known for its "mechanics," whom repaired wagons. The train still comes through town; which adds to its charm. In our sanctuary space, is relaxing music and seats that cater to small conversation and peaceful relaxation. Our brick walls offer warmth, while the sound of water trickling gives serenity. Come in with a friend or a group, and escape to an oasis of calm.
