Hello my name is Carol and I am about to tell you the real story of the creation of Heel Your Sole,
Inc. My daughter Rachel and I opened our doors in February 2006. Before this time I was feeling
empty and dissatisfied with my profession in healthcare. At the end of the day I realized that my time
was spent struggling with insurance and drug companies in an attempt to get patients what they
needed but couldn’t afford. These long days wore on my spirit. Personal life changes awakened me. I
needed a space that would allow me to be creative and nurturing to myself and others. I found the
courage to pursue a new path. I drew on past nursing experience that taught me the power of healing
touch. I dusted off my “alternative” healing books I acquired during my years of practicing massage
therapy, and I bought a few more.
My daughter and I took a trip to visit friends in Maine where we all had a great foot massage in a
quaint Tea house. My daughter “nagged” me for the next 6 months telling me that we should do this.
I resisted, and besides I am a coffee drinker. I thought maybe I would have a little gift shop and offer
the same customer service I had experienced in the south, I knew that I wanted people to feel very
special. Nothing really came together until one morning I woke up at 3 am and could not get back to
sleep due to the voice in my head that said we needed to open a foot sanctuary. Instead of calling a
psychiatrist I called my daughter, who responded “finally!”
We met for lunch at the Pizza Grille where we began our planning. While driving home my daughter
called to tell me she thought of a name. “Heel Your Sole.” I heard, Heal your soul. I said that sounds
like a church. “No mom like in your foot.” Then I got it! My daughter began her research into
essential oils, and together we created our menu and protocol.  Our location presented itself, and we
put my son-in-law to work renovating and building. We found a master potter- Mark Fitzgerald
willing to work with our unusual request for our large foot bowls.  We enlisted my husband to use his
extensive knowledge of music that fills the sanctuary with just what you needed to hear.
Our “work” has been a learning process over the last two years and we have made changes as needed.
We have been blessed with professional therapists that share our mission. We have served over 1800
people since we opened, and at the end of the day my spirit has been lifted by the “soles” we have
comforted.
